Food for Thought Using Dog Treats for Training
Every one has their vices that they like, some which can get them to do anything. For dogs, the major vice that will get them to do what you want them to is food. Using this not only as a way to get dogs to stay healthy, but also as a way to train can be a great advantage while you are teaching your dogs about the rules of the home.
Using food as a way to get dogs trained moves back to the scientific experiment of Pavlov. He used food to reward dogs once they responded to the sound of a bell. By ringing the bell, he could get them to come to a certain area at a specific time. The reward, of course, was a meal. Over time, the dogs naturally did it. This is the basis for dog training today.
Why does food work so well with dogs? It is a matter of survival. As soon as a dog smells food, their instinct kicks in, telling them that if they make the right moves, they will be able to survive. They know that by doing the right thing, they will have the ability to get the prize of food. If you are training a dog, you can use this to your advantage. All you have to do is keep the food near the dog. As soon as they do something that is right, you can give them the treat as a reward.
Not only is it good to keep dog treats around for when a dog is training, but also when they are simply playing around the house. Often times, you will catch them doing certain things that you will want to be reinforced or they will begin to do what has been part of the training in order to receive the treat. You will want to make sure to continue to reward them, as this will keep reinforcing their good behavior.
Over time, you will notice that you wont need to offer the extra snacks for the dog training. Your dogs will naturally respond to the idea of food and be happy with doing what you want without the extra meal. If you want to make sure that your dog enjoys training and does what you want, adding in an extra snack is a great trick to use.
