Home Schooling – An Alternative Education System

The concept of home schooling is not a new one. It has been around for a very long time but only recently been recognized as an alternative to public schooling. The process of home schooling may sound very daunting to most parents who feel that it takes too much time and effort to educate their children at home. It may surprise you but it is not as tough as it sounds. If you just take out some time to do some research, you will find that it is indeed an alternative that you can consider.

The Advent Of Modern Home Schooling

The concept of compulsory education started as early as the 18th century in the United States. Most children were educated at home by their family. In the 19th century, a law was passed for compulsory school attendance and most children stopped learning at home and had to attend public schools. You could say the pioneer of modern home schooling was John Holt who tried to establish how children often failed because of the schools they were going to. He brought back the concept of teaching children at home. Since the 1960s the home schooling movement has picked up rapidly.

Home schooling is an option that many parents agree, works for them. Many stay-at-home moms are opting for this method of education because they have the time to do so. It is based on certain curriculum which you can get on the internet or in certain book stores. Some schools also have home schooling material which you can buy from them. You may find a home schooling group in your neighborhood where a few parents teach a group of children. This could be a good idea if both parents are working and still want to home school their children.

Apart from doing it yourself, you could even hire a tutor to come home to teach your children. This may sound like a rather expensive affair but if you look around, you will be able to find someone who will suit your financial situation. You will find tutors who prefer home schooling to public schooling and they will not charge you exorbitant rates.

Many parents who have turned to home schooling have done so for various reasons. They feel that their children will be able to learn better at home as they have no distractions. They also get full attention from their parent or tutor as there are no other children. Some parents feel their children are safer at home and yet others believe they are better disciplined. And they all agree that home schooling works.
