Poetry Reading

There have been many times throughout history when Poetry reading has been much more popular than Poetry reading is today. Before all the mass media entertainment, people enjoyed Poetry reading. Poetry reading was a great form of entertainment. Poetry reading could be done on an informal basis among a few friends or Poetry reading could be a more formal event, maybe at a local civic center or school. These Poetry reading events were much anticipated and well attended. And these Poetry reading events didn't have to feature anyone famous as the author of the poetry. No, these Poetry reading events could simply be just people from the community reading poetry. However, there were Poetry reading events that were organized and at one time, were quite popular.

The great thing about these Poetry reading events was that it could expose people to poetry that they might not ever come in contact with otherwise. These Poetry reading events could be very educational and quite entertaining. Often times, the Poetry reading would feature a number of readers from the community. These readers would feature in their Poetry reading a favorite poem. Their Poetry reading might be a classic poem. Their Poetry reading might be a dramatic poem. Their Poetry reading might be an obscure piece that they felt warranted more attention. Their Poetry reading might be an epic poem. Their Poetry reading might be many short poems.
Their Poetry reading might even be poems of their own creation.

So you can see how these Poetry reading events could be instructional and fun. Often there would be no admission charge so a Poetry reading really was a very accessible form of entertainment for anyone. Of course, this was back in the days before TV, radio, Computers, video games, movies and the internet. People were more open to home spun entertainment and it didn't take as much glitz to hold peoples attention. Just a good Poetry reading would do.  People don't seem to go in much for Poetry reading events these days, unless the Poetry reading will be by some famous poet and then I think they are more interested in the famous poet than they are in the Poetry reading.

There have been brief times among small sub-culture groups where Poetry reading was in vogue. The Beatniks of the 1950's loved sitting around in coffee houses and listening to a good Poetry reading. this type of Poetry reading usually featured unknown poets reading from their latest works. This type of Poetry reading was very popular in the sub-culture for a while
