Have A Swinging Time With Sewing

Sewing evolved from a necessity of our cave dwelling ancestorsthe necessity to protect the body from the harsh nature. But today sewing and garment making is a major industry by itself. Most of us take up a needle atleast once in life - to sew a button or to mend an emergency tear and stuff like that. However, for some, their association with needle and sewing go past emergencies; they take it up as a serious hobby.

Sewing can be a very useful and fruitful hobby. Who does not like to decorate ones house or make eye-catching clothes for themselves, friend and family? Learning to sew can help you do all these. It is a perfect hobby whether you do it in the needle and thread way or through a sewing machine.

Getting Started

If you are serious about taking up sewing as a hobby, it is necessary that you take some training. You can learn from your family members who are expert in sewing; every family has an aunt or a grandmother who is expert in sewing. If you cannot get hold of one, then try beiginners courses offered by sewing companies or fabric shops. If you go through your local yellow page you can find a good sewing course that will be helpful for you.

The Next Step

After you have learnt the basics, buy a good sewing machine. Do not go for high-end models with different types of stiching options in the beigining; it can be confusing for a novice tailor. Go for simple mechanical machine, hand or foot pedal type.  Start with simple stiches and patterns. You can buy different patterns readymade from fabric stores or from the net and then sew them together. Sewing patterns are tissue papers marked with needed dimension which will help you to produce a garment. Be careful while you are sewing together the patterns, if you lay them wrongly against each other or against wrong side of the grain, your efforts will be fruitless. Soon, you will sew together throw pillows for your sofas to fancy dresses for your daughters play to may be a wedding gown for your friend!

Once you get into the fun of sewing, you will see that your creative urges will increase day by day. So looking for a good fabric store will become a necessity. Go for shops that regularly arrange for short courses and trainings. Try combining different fabrics together for a unique showpiece. However, go for costly fabrics only when you have mastered the art of sewing and cutting the cloth according to a specific design, otherwise the whole fabric will be lost. As you will go on learning how to sew, you will see that even scraps of fabrics left can be turned into beautiful and useful things (if not anything else, it can make dolls clothes for your daughter). In the end, you will see that your hobby of sewing has turned you into most favourite person between your friends and family.
