There are many film companies out there. It seems that there are more film companies all the time. Film companies are not the same as film studios who do everything from produce films to distribution and advertising. Film companies are formed for the sole purpose of making films and they often ally themselves with film studios for financing and distribution.

film companies come in many types and sizes. There are the small boutique film companies that specialize in certain types or styles of films such as the film companies that make educational films. Or the film companies that make only period pieces and historical dramas. Then there are the medium sized film companies that do a little of this and a little of that. And then there are the big film companies that specialize in feature films. These film companies usually have a track record of big successes so they can get their projects financed by the big studios and major investors.

Looking for financing for films is a big part of what film companies do when they are not actually in the process of producing a film. Films have become so expensive to produce that film companies need to do a lot of fund raising in order to finance a film project. Some film projects have their financing built right in. Film companies that specialize in industrial films develop film projects only at a client's request and expense so this type of film company is more selling and educational or public relations product to the client than they re pitching a film idea for financing.

It seems that these days, almost every major film star has the own film company. there are obviously some tax benefits to these film companies and having their own film company gives the star a little more control over the projects they work on. Once they have their own film company, they are no longer just hired talent. If their film company is producing the film that they are starring in, then they have a lot more say about the script and they have some control over who gets cast in the other parts and who is hired to direct the film. A major bankable star working through their own film company can be a very formidable force in the film industry.

Film companies come in all types and sizes, but there is one thing they all have in common and that is that love of films.
