Film Writing

Film writing seems like a great way to earn a living. Just come up with an interesting story, a few good characters and some snappy dialogue and you are in. some film writing doesn't even require creating an original story. With this kind of film writing, you just adapt someone else's book or short story for the screen. How hard could that be? It also seems like film writing must pay pretty well, what with all the money that goes into making a film, the person doing the film writing must get paid pretty well. So all in all film writing looks like a very good way to make a living. But how do I get started? you might ask. Well, I guess that is the tricky part. Doing film writing and actually getting paid for it, I mean.

Well, one way to get started in film writing, if you don't  wealthy, you can do your film writing full time. If you are doing your film writing on speculation, it would be best to be doing strictly original film writing as you need to by the rights to someone else's book or story if you want to adapt it for the screen so that kind of film writing is probably not the kind you want to do unless you have a lot of money to risk. But if you don't then try some original film writing.

If you have what you think is a good story idea, you can begin your film writing by just fleshing out the story a little to give some idea of what it is about and then you can begin shopping it around to people in the film business to see if there is any interest and maybe someone at a movie production company will option your story and hire you to do more film writing in order to turn your story into a film. In order for this approach to film writing to work, you will need a pretty compelling story and a lot of luck.

Another approach to film writing would be to take your story idea and write out the entire film as you see it. Then if your film writing is good enough, you mighty be able to get an agent who can then sell your script to a movie studio. This approach to film writing is more work up front, but it proves you are able to handle film writing and makes you more of a marketable film writing property.
