Senior Employment

Senior employment varies in character and opportunity depending upon the senior's experience and capabilities, and on the current job market.  Senior employment is more difficult in some industries than others, and it is unfortunate that prejudice in senior employment sometimes deprives a business or industry of valuable experience.  In other instances, the education and experience of seniors makes senior employment difficult for them as their knowledge and abilities are not in keeping with current technology.

In seeking senior employment, many seniors find that they are simply crowded out by younger applicants.  If such a situation occurs because the person seeking senior employment is behind in technological knowledge, there are facilities which offer quick updates in education to assist in finding senior employment.  Courses in computer usage, for example, can assist those seeking senior employment in various industries or businesses.

Sometimes those seeking senior employment are lacking in job search techniques.  There are organizations, some county or state-sponsored, to assist those seeking senior employment. Improved resume writing may help those seeking senior employment, by highlighting pertinent skills and experience. Some seeking senior employment are not skilled at handling job interviews, and training and practice in this area can give those seeking senior employment some added advantage.

There are some service industries which may offer senior employment to seniors who do not have special skills.  Local employment agencies or city and county agencies may offer assistance to those seeking senior employment in service areas.

Those seeking senior employment should of course avail themselves of local employment ads in their job search.  Some ads in the employment section will obviously target younger persons, or persons with very current technological skills.  Other ads, however, may offer opportunity for senior employment to those with experience in the field. These sources for possible senior employment should be pursued aggressively, with the applicant first making sure of his or her resume and interviewing skills.  In terms of the application process, those seeking senior employment should also give care to appearance, looking well dressed and well groomed according to current standards.

Senior employment can be challenging and more difficult than employment for younger persons, but with care and perseverance, there are opportunities out there for those seeking senior employment in many fields. And there are organizations to assist the efforts of those seeking senior employment.
