Senior Health Insurance

Senior health insurance is an important issue.  Senior health insurance has become more important in the US with the growing number of senior citizens. Senior health insurance is important to all, but it is less vital to the very wealthy than to the middle income or poor senior. The well-to-do can often afford major medical expenses not covered with basic senior health insurance. Senior health insurance, like all health insurance, has become very expensive, as the costs of care and drugs have risen.

As the category of senior refers in various situations from mid-fifties upward, senior health insurance needs and costs also vary from the non-retired to the retired senior.  Senior health insurance for those still working can be a combination of personal insurance and in some cases insurance provided by employers. Types of coverage have changed also for senior health insurance with the rise of HMOs which many find a negative factor.

The establishment of Social Security and Medicare in mid-twenties changed the face of senior  health insurance.  Many who had no senior health insurance coverage can now rely on Medicare and Medicaid for basic coverage, though there are deductibles.'If a senior has a major disability or requires major surgery, senior health insurance in the form of Medicare alone will leave large bills to be covered by the senior or family. Many seniors supplement Medicare coverage with other senior health insurance. Many companies advertise on television their types of senior health insurance and seniors can make choices about additional senior health insurance if they have the means to get such coverage.

One of the reasons senior health insurance has become more and more expensive and important is the availability and growing use of drugs and medical treatment among seniors. Ailments which seniors once simply endured, or treated naturally, or died from, are now treated with a variety of drugs widely advertised nationally and internationally. Senior health insurance does not always cover the cost of such treatments, nor does Medicare. Seniors who need, or feel they require, such drugs often pay large sums not covered by senior health insurance.

The senior organization, AARP, offers supplemental senior health insurance.  AARP regularly advertises on TV, and many seniors who are members of the organization take advantage of information and additional insurance to supplement their senior health insurance. There are also some agencies, including government agencies, who offer information and sometimes monetary assistance to supplement senior health insurance..  It behooves seniors to obtain all possible information regarding possible assistance and supplements to their senior health insurance.
