Athletic Shoes

There are literally hundreds of types and makes of athletic shoes.  There are athletic shoes for the regular walker.  There are athletic shoes for competitive runners.  There are athletic shoes for tennis players.  There are athletic shoes for field sports.  There are athletic shoes for winter sports.  And there are athletic shoes for professional football, basketball and soccer players. For every type of athletic shoe, there are several manufacturers. And for every type of athletic shoe, there are several styles. Athletes have many choices and it behooves each to find the type of athletic shoe best suited to his or her activities.

Perhaps the simplest athletic shoes are those which are used by persons who walk regularly, possibly considerable distances, as exercise. Athletic shoes for walkers need to provide thorough comfort and good support through the arch and around the heel. Athletic shoes for walking need not have the fairly elaborate protective elements of athletic shoes for runners. In the latter case, several elements are present, from outsole with a treaded surface, to a strongly constructed midsole and an upper sole which wraps over the top of the foot.

Athletic shoes for court sports require treaded soles to prevent slipping, and good support elements throughout the shoe...including arch support and firm heel fit. Athletic shoes for winter sports especially require good ankle support, as well as the fit and support supplied to the foot overall.

Athletic shoes for field sports, such as football and soccer, must supply firm support with inner soles and fit around the heel, but also are fitted with cleats, studs or spikes.  Sometimes these gripping elements are detachable from the shoe, but are essential in athletic shoes for field sports, both amateur and professional.

There are several precautionary steps one should take when purchasing athletic shoes for all types of activities.  When trying on athletic shoes, this should be done after exercise, when feet are at their largest. Also when being fitted for athletic shoes, the athlete should wear the socks that will be worn when involved in the activity.  This should be true even when simply purchasing athletic shoes for walking. When wearing athletic shoes, there should be ample room to wiggle the toes and the purchaser should walk around in the athletic shoes before making a purchase.

When purchasing any type of athletic shoe, one must consider good fit, quality construction, and  all of the protective elements related to any athletic activity.  Athletic shoes of good quality are often quite expensive. It is worth a sizeable investment, however, to protect the feet and body of the athlete or of the average person who enjoys walking or competitive sports.
