Tennis Shoes

Tennis shoes, now simply one type of athletic shoe, have evolved over decades into very specialized shoes.  Tennis shoes are obviously designed for tennis players, but some wear tennis shoes as a sport shoe. Tennis shoes offer enough support to be used as walking shoes for those who simply walk regularly for exercise.  Tennis shoes, however, are designed specifically for use on tennis or other courts.  And certainly the best of tennis shoes are worn by professional tennis players.

Tennis shoes as such first became popular in the early 20th century and have evolved since then into carefully designed and structured tennis shoes of today. Tennis shoes are an important element of overall tennis gear, including racquets, balls and court clothing.

As playing tennis involves not only quick dashes about the court, but shifting weight frequently from foot to foot, side to side.  Tennis shoes are designed to accommodate all of the movements involved in playing the game. There are tennis shoes for men and tennis shoes for women, but all tennis shoes have common design elements.

Tennis shoes are manufactured by all of the major sports shoe and equipment companies, and also by some small companies. Serious tennis players and professionals favor the tennis shoes manufactured by well known companies such as Adidas and Nike.  Tennis shoes are carefully designed and produced with attention to design which includes tread that prevents slippage on the court.  The treads may vary in tennis shoes, but the tread is always an important part of the design.  Attention is also given to good arch support, and support which also holds the foot firmly in side to side movement.  It is also important that tennis shoes provide good heel support, cupping the heel to hold the foot firmly at all times.

Although all good tennis shoes include the important elements to support the feet properly, different tennis shoes will be best suited to different individuals, and shopping for tennis shoes should be done carefully, as with all athletic shoes.  Tennis shoes should be tried on after the individual has exercised, so that feet are at the largest, slightly swollen, so the tennis shoes will fit during heavy exercise. As with any shoe, the buyer should walk around in the tennis shoes before purchase, and wriggle toes to be sure of a good fit.  It is also important when trying on tennis shoes before purchasing to wear the socks that will be worn when playing, as this also will affect the fit and comfort of the shoes.  To enjoy the sport of tennis, it is vital to have good tennis shoes.
