After school safety - tips and reminders
When parents send off their children for after school programs, they often assume that the child will be safe. But as the number of children taking part in these activities has increased, it is essential to consider all safety issues.
Children are vulnerable whenever they are outside the classes. While going or returning, they should know the safest path to take. Many kids hang out with their friends just after these classes. Find out 'danger zones' from your neighbors and get the children to be aware of these.
The child must know how to handle emergencies. It is better to talk over the various scenarios with your child. Tell her what she should do in case the class is abruptly called off. Demonstrate to her the first-aid kit at home and ensure she knows whom to contact during an emergency. Post any important contact information in a location that is easily accessible to the child. If the child is going to be alone at home, discuss a few unexpected things with her. Assure her to use the safety chain ALWAYS.
Relay on your neighbors and friends whenever there is a need to. Let your child know who can be contacted at times of emergency. Demand your child to check in by phone. Most importantly, always tell the child to be in a group. Going to toilets alone or going home via obscure streets must be avoided.
