Pregnancy diets are not that different for normal healthy diets, which often comes as surprise to people. Even women who are following very special diets before pregnancy can continue those diets without problems as long as they are healthy diets. Some women go into their pregnancy on a diet that is part of their way of life and it isn't necessarily a pregnancy diet. An example of this is the vegan diet. Another diet that is healthy and vital to women who are pregnant as well as not pregnant is a diet that is designed for those with diabetes or other blood sugar disorders. As far as pregnancy diets go, one that limits the amount of sugar can do no harm as long as there are plenty of sources of good carbohydrates in the diet.

Diets for weight loss during pregnancy can be dangerous for the baby and should never be introduced without a healthcare provider monitoring them. There might be special circumstances where a doctor will suggest a pregnancy diet that addresses weight loss, but this is not something to take on without supervision.

A healthy pregnancy diet will usually only involve some minor increases in calorie intake and additional protein and calcium, zinc, iron, vitamins and other minerals. Energy needs only increase about fifteen percent or about 300 calories during pregnancy. There are many sources where a woman can learn about the adjustments she should make in her diet to create a very healthy pregnancy diet. Some good places to look for this information would be at the local bookstores and on the internet where there will be huge selections of books and articles, respectively on healthy eating while pregnant and detailed pregnancy diets.

It is universally agreed that a healthy pregnancy diet will not include any alcohol consumption as alcohol at any time during a pregnancy can cause serious harm to the baby. Good hydration, however with ample amounts of water is a very important element of any healthy diet, including a pregnancy diet.
