Senior Citizen Housing

Senior citizen housing is a phenomenon which has developed in recent decades.  In earlier times, senior citizen housing for those no longer able to maintain their homes, consisted of living with relatives or in the poor house.  Senior citizen housing now takes many forms, and the senior citizen housing chosen by senior citizens depends upon several factors.  Senior citizen housing for wealthy, retired citizens may well be a large, expensive home staffed with a number of servants. For a retired business couple, senior citizen housing might be a small home or apartment in a middle class neighborhood.  After all, senior citizen is a term applied to those over 62...and this is an age when many are still actively employed, or enjoying a happy, activity-filled life.

In general, however, the term senior citizen housing applies to neighborhoods, apartments, gated communities or condominiums designed specifically to accommodate senior citizens who no longer live in privately owned homes.  Senior citizen housing can range from quite inexpensive, small apartments, or even hotels, to beautiful gated communities which supply every amenity available in senior citizen housing. Some groups of condominiums have certain areas of senior citizen housing for those who require assisted living, sometimes on a daily basis. .

In the more expensive senior citizen housing communities, some with upwards of one hundred condominium apartments, there are all the facilities which might be available in the central city. There are shopping areas, restaurants, movie theatres, billiard tables, small gambling casinos, rooms for dancing and general socializing.  This type of senior citizen housing offers multiple amenities and amusements to retired persons with substantial incomes or savings.  Such senior citizen housing, however, is available only to a small segment of the senior population.  Most forms of senior citizen housing, however, take into consideration the more limited physical abilities and interests of many older citizens.

For those taking advantage of senior citizen housing facilities, one of the primary considerations is that of safety. Many senior citizens are, or feel they are, more vulnerable than younger persons and are therefore concerned with the safety of senior citizen housing.
Some facilities offering senior citizen housing are protected by agencies which provide
24-hour protection with security personnel. Others are gated with a secure area around buildings. Some senior citizen housing simply employs a system of having visitors ring an apartment, announce themselves, and enter only when the occupant " buzzes" them in. This system is probably the least secure of senior citizen housing safety measures.
