Work for Peace

People say they are willing to work for peace. But are they really willing to work for peace? Or are they just saying that because it sounds good? Do they know that to work for peace they might have to share this world a little more equally? Do they know that to work for peace they might have to put themselves at risk? Do they know that to work for peace they might have to give up some of their privileges? Are they really ready to work for peace or do they just like the sound of it?

How about the major industrialized countries of the world? Are they ready to work for peace? Will they work for peace if it means an end to their multi-billion dollar arms deals? Will they work for peace if it means that they can't consume a disproportionate amount of the world's resources any more? Will they work for peace if it means that their countries can no longer dominate the world? Will they work for peace if it means that they might have to respect other countries' ideas? Will they work for peace if it means that they themselves, the political leaders, will lose their power and wealth?

What are people willing to do to work for peace? Well, I guess it all depends on the situation. If there is an active war going on in their land they might be willing to do a lot to work for peace. But then again, they might not be willing to work for peace even then. So many of the conflicts around the world seem so intractable. People are more willing to work for war than work for peace. The hatreds go so far back. The religious intolerance is so deep seated that they don't even want to work for peace. No, they want to work for hegemony.

They don't want to work for peace if it means that their cherished ideas won't win out. They don't want to work for peace if it means they have to live and let live. They don't want to work for peace if it means they have to tolerate their neighbor's believing in some different god from their own. They are willing to destroy their own countries and themselves to win. And the big arms dealers and the countries that are run by the military industrial complex are only too happy to help make it all happen. They sure don't want to see anybody really work for peace.
