Senior Softball

Those who do not play or are not interested in softball might be astonished at the interest and activity in senior softball.  Numerous organizations support senior softball, and almost every community of any size has a senior softball league. Nationally, Senior Softball USA is the largest senior softball association.  This association supports senior softball not only in the US, but supports senior softball worldwide. Support for women's softball as well as men's is provided by this organization which  supports and sponsor's world championships in senior softball  The organization also sponsors senior softball tours anf regional championships.

Senior softball is supported locally, nationally and internationally by the International Senior Softball Association.  This group supports senior softball worldwide for men and women over 50 years of age.  There are also many state and regional associations, too numerous to list, which sponsor senior softball.  Senior softball is obviously a widely recognized sport, in which thousands of men and women in their fifties and upward participate.

Organizations which support senior softball in some cases also discuss the health issues which senior softball presents to older generations.  In general, senior softball requires activities and movements which are difficult or dangerous to senior citizens, even those in good health. In senior softball, one rarely sees a participant sliding onto a base or racing across the field to make a catch. Even without extreme maneuvers, senior softball is demanding on senior joints and muscles.

One article found on the Internet cites the fact that ballet dancers rarely experience injuries, largely due to the fact that they have trained their bodies to have great flexibility and strength. There are few senior softball players who have trained their bodies similarly, and it is difficult, if not impossible, to instill these physical characteristics after middle age.  It is , however, wise for senior softball players to work on these areas in order to prevent injury during senior softball games.

Apart from susceptibility to injury, those playing senior softball need to be mindful of the fact that it takes older bodies longer to recover from minor stresses, strains and injuries.  For this reason, and because senior softball carries with it some stress and strain in every game, senior softball plays need to be mindful of this slower recovery factor, and give their bodies time to make minor repairs between games. Players in senior softball need to space their games so their bodies have time to mend themselves from stress and strain. Whatever the challenges, senior softball is a sport that's here to stay.
