Senior Women

The status and circumstances of senior women in the US and much of the western world have changed dramatically in the past half century.  Senior women in the not-too-distant past were expected to move from young wife and mother to mature matron to grandmother, often in the same household. Few senior women were active outside the home, and even fewer senior women had positions of power in business or professional areas. The senior women of today are in far different circumstances in many cases.

There are many still who feel that the place of a woman at any age, including senior women,  is in the home or as a volunteer in community or charitable organizaations.  Many still feel that women are not geared to reign in big corporations or in government. Many senior women today have disproved these ideas.

The term " senior" refers to persons in their mid-fifties and beyond. Many people in their fifties are at the peak of their careers, and many senior women in this category are in the top echelons of major corporations.  Other senior women in their fifties and sixties are active in professional and research organizations, as well as local, state and federal government.

Senior women working to gain or maintain influential positions can look to such women as Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Clinton as examples of the accomplishments of some senior women. To the senior women of the 1930's in the US, the concept of a senior woman running for president of the country would have been astonishing...even unbelievable.  To the senior women who later spearheaded the women's movement, such an idea would have been more believable...even expected.

On a personal level, senior women today are more healthy, more physically active and more careful of appearance than ever before.  Many cosmetics and body care products are directed to senior women as never before.  Senior women are often involved in both social and physical activities in their communities and in the broader business and social environment.  Senior women are also involved in politics as never before.

A look at the roster of people of power in business and in world events will show that senior women have positions of power in both these arenas.  Numerous corporations have senior women at their heads or in major management positions.  Many senior women command wealth as well as power.. While the incomes of senior women in business do not equal those of male counterparts, some earn incomes in the multi-million dollar category annually.
Senior women are definitely a force in the world today.
